Glass Cabochons, Chaton Stones & Resin Flat Backs
Used to create bracelets, necklaces, pendants and rings, cabochons were traditionally round or oval unfaceted polished gemstones, domed with flat or cushion backs to secure them into a frame. Stones selected for a cabochon cut would typically be low clarity or too soft to facet, opaque or with intense colouring, or possessing unusual optical qualities or natural inclusions. Also known as cabouchons, or cabs, this term is now applied to other materials such as acrylic, ceramic, clay, glass, lucite, shell, stone and wood, as well as various shapes from crosses, hearts, flowers, squares and teardrops to unique free-form designs.

Chatons have stayed closer to their origins as faceted stones shaped for use in a chaton jewellery setting, secured with metal claws or glue. They have a faceted cone shaped pointed back or a flat back with eight, twelve or fourteen rose cut facets or bevels. To add to their reflectivity a chaton is often foil backed.
