Elastic Cords, Illusion Cords & Nylon Monofilament Beading Cords
Clear or coloured Elastic cords are made from stretchable polymer nylon cords available in a range of sizes. They are ideal for stretchy bracelets designed to slide easily over the wrist without the need for a closure. Elastic cords can be crimped, knotted, glued and fused, but can be damaged over time by sharp edged beads. Elastic cords are perfect for inexpensive jewellery and childrens makes. Brands such as Beadalon Elasticity, Beadalon Elonga and Stretch Magic lead the market.
Illusion cords and monofilament are beading cords made from synthetic polymers extruded to form a single filament or strand of cord. They are soft yet durable with good strength. Illusion cords also has a low optical density making them ideal for invisible or floating jewellery designs, virtually disappearing against the skin with beads appearing to float around a wearers neck. *_Illusion cords*_ are produced in a range of thicknesses and tensile strengths, as well as in coloured finishes. Notable brands include Beadalon Supplemax Illusion Cords and Griffin Illusion Cords.
Because nylon monofilament does not fray it can be threaded through bead holes without a needle. Clasps can be added using a surgeons knot with bead cement providing added security, or crimp beads can be used. These nylon beading cords are best used with acrylic, wood and other non-abrasive beads as monofilament can be damaged over time by abrasion. Although improving, nylon beading cords do not drape as well as silk or beading wire, with potential to hang awkwardly unless heavier beads are present.
